About the Mugshot Machine

In the spring of 2005 I was teaching my Digital Imaging course and was showing the class the wonderful book Photobooth by Babbette Hines. I have always loved the wonderful rich quality and spontaneity present in photobooth pictures. I had just finished the video and printing components of of my paint program Beautiful Dorena and it flashed into my head that I could (relatively) easily make a photobooth-like application in Macromedia Director. I spent the following two weeks working on it in my spare time. While I didn’t stick strictly with the traditional photobooth look and format I did do what set out to accomplish.

I have taken it to several events and people seem to love it. It makes 4 X 6 inch prints on an Epson PictureMate printer. It was also an excuse for me to buy a Mac Mini computer. Since I had some special effects routines developed for Beautiful Dorena I decided to through them in too. While I prefer a straight color or sepia toned picture the special effects have been popular with users. Right now I don’t have a download version because it runs in a kiosk fashion (no quit button, etc.) but I might make it available in the future. I’m not quite sure where I am going with it.

As it turns out Apple Computer has come out with a similar program that they are giving away with some computers so I have decided to give The Mugshot Machine away for free.
